nerdle

nerdle is a daily math puzzle: find a hidden eight-character calculation in six tries, with colored tiles showing how close each guess is. The answers aren't pulled from every valid equation — the team hand-picked 17,723 they thought players would enjoy, enough for a fresh puzzle until 2070.

Notes

The homepage gives the game almost nothing to compete with: one white card, phone-width and centered on pale grey, holding the 8×6 grid, a number-and-operator keypad and two buttons. Green, purple and black carry all the feedback, so the board reads at a glance without a legend. Below the fold it becomes something else: a long, plainly set explainer moving from permitted characters and order of operations to opening-guess strategy and endgame deduction, closer to a teacher’s handout than a landing page. It is an odd pairing that works, since the players who need that half only reach it once they have decided they want it.
